At the end of the autumn in 1697, before King Louis XIV and a few court officials left Fontainebleau for Versailles, only ten musicians remained in the castle to perform the last mass. An extraordinary manuscript from the time reveals how the composers pared down the majestic royal music for this little ensemble, bidding adieu to Fontainebleau .
