When the composer Johannes Okeghem died in Tours in 1497, Josquin Desprez decided to write a sophisticated and expressive piece of music in which Okeghem’s friends and composers lament his death. The music is paired with Rogier van der Weyden’s Deposition of the Christ, which evokes similar emotions and enhances the experience.
